Managing partner, Forraje Andino

Two organisations working in Peru, Hampshire Foundation Inc[1], a US 501(c)3 charity, and Puragro SAC[2], have incubated an initiative to produce animal feed in the Andes (Pampa Laive, Junín region) since 2017. Today the project comprises some 80 hectares of land belonging to 4 farming communities, under cultivation with alfalfa and oats. The directors are in the process of spinning off the project under a new entity, Forraje Andino[3]. They are looking for an ambitious and impact-motivated managing partner to lead this initiative, producing animal feed to improve land utilisation and livelihoods for smallholder farmers in the region and potentially elsewhere in Peru. The directors seek a managing partner who will guide the strategic direction of the initiative, which is currently focused on alfalfa as a highly nutritious, perennial plant that adapts well to the climatic conditions of the Andes.

Reporting to the directors, who are based in Europe, the managing partner will:

  • Design the overall strategy as well as supervise field operations for the 80 Ha under cultivation

  • Manage the execution of a new pilot to find optimal conditions for alfalfa cultivation (trial-and-error, adjustments where needed, analysis and interpretation of results)

  • Manage the field team (currently 2 full time staff)

  • Design sales strategy (bales and pellets) and oversee implementation

  • Manage relationships with stakeholders (local communities, public entities, customers)

  • Manage and report on budgets and forecasts

The managing partner will benefit from the following resources:

  • Outsourced admin & bookkeeping

  • Specialist agronomist support via a domestic external consultant

  • Two field members running operations and sales respectively

We estimate the time commitment to be between 2.5 and 3 days a week. The proposed gross monthly salary is between S/ 9,000 and S/ 12,000 Peruvian Soles, commensurate with experience. We are however open to discussing a full-time position.

Requirements for the role

  1. Agronomist or similar education and/or experience cultivating crops;

  2. Experience managing projects including budget and team management;

  3. Ability to communicate well with different stakeholders (e.g. farmers, local government);

  4. Motivated to travel to the field to monitor growth and connect with communities;

  5. Fluent in Spanish and English;

  6. Comfortable working independently and remotely;

  7. Integrity and honesty essential;

  8. Based in Lima or Huancayo (Peru)
